Generally I don’t see daily sops coming on the different channels regularly, but recently few of them caught my attention even before they started. I really admire the authors, the scriptwriters and the directors who have come up with such nice subjects and depict the social evils and the human psychology and its various shades i.e. reactions to the different situations that an ordinary person undergoes to. I would also congratulate the different cast in those serials who have made these roles look realistic. The three serials worth mentioning here are Ganga Ki Dheej that comes on Sahara One, Arakshan: Armaano Ki Bali and Rishton se Badi Pratha probably both are coming on Colors. Let me take these three interesting concepts one by one. I would write about the three in three different editions. In this edition, I would talk about the serial Ganga Ki Dheej and the undercurrent associated with this sop.
Ganga Ki Dheej is a serial based on the existence of feudalistic mindset of the people belonging to the erstwhile zamindar or royal families mostly still prevailing in our villages and small towns even when more than sixty years have passed since our independence. They command utmost respect as if they are the gods of those areas and all others are their slaves, courtesy the fear of any untoward that runs through the blood veins of the people residing in those areas. In the name of the traditions and fear of Gods, some handful of pervert-minded persons under the mask of the religion make nexus with those powerful persons to make an insurmountable force. This fort is so strong that no one can enter in to this, not even the social reformers, police and media. This group is exploiting the people in all possible ways.
Kabir Bedi who is the protagonist in the serial and is known as Dada Bhai belonging to the Zamindar family is seen as a very religious and large-hearted person who always thinks about the welfare of the people. But in reality he is highly pervert whose prying eyes are constantly looking for every beautiful unmarried teenaged girl whom he wants to make a sex slave for himself. A saadhvi called Mahamaayi who is highly regarded by the people living in that area runs a religious group with dozens of her disciples, but in reality they are gang of goons which she heads. Dada Bhai and Mahamaayi are having nexus and in fact she supplies those girls to him by declaring the girls as unholy by branding them character less. She takes their test in which the girl has to pass and thus prove herself innocent in front of all the villagers. The girl is taken forcibly right from their homes and the task for the test is given so tough which is almost impossible for any ordinary person to pass. And this test is taken in the name of Maa Ganga and in her words, She is asking for the test. After the girl fails in the test, she is sent to the Narak kaa Dwaar, which no body knows or dares to even know what is that… In fact that is nothing but an Aishgaah for the Zamindaar where he enjoys sex with those girls. Those girls can never come out of that place ever. And this is a secret for all… no body knows about this other than the two involved in this nexus.
Well, the story is really relevant; I remember I once visited my papa where he was posted that time. It was a small block but was very beautiful, surrounded by mountains from all sides… the location still refreshes my mind… the mountains have always attracted me specially those that have greeneries. My father was a government servant. He was busy in the day so I was sitting idle and then I found some local people to whom my father told me to pass my time with. Those people were very nice and they gave me a good reception. I still remember that dish, Dahi and Chuda…. I never have had such a tasty Dahi Chuda either before or after. In the conversation, they told me about the unique tradition that till few years ago was very much prevalent there, and it was that every girl of the locality on her Bidai to her groom’s place after her marriage has to first stay for one night at the place of the Raja of the area (the person belonging to the erstwhile royal family, still considered to be a Raja even though there is no riyasat for them now) where the Raja would first make sex with the girl. And, most interestingly, no body opposed, because this tradition was going on for generations. The kings changed, generations changed, but the tradition continued. The Raja of the area is paralleled with the Gods. And one night stay of the newly wedded bride at the Raja’s palace was supposed to be the blessing of the God and an auspicious beginning of the marital life for her. Thank God, now with the spread of education and change in the perception of the people, now the things have changed in that area. But this story is not an isolated case of its kind; this practice or similar kind of practices may be prevalent even now in other places. That’s why we say, India is a unique country… very different than the others. And the idiom ‘It happens only in India’ really makes a sense in this non-sense world.
